Sining Shelter

PEPI'S PICKS

Rehab
ALBUM | Rusted Shut

Maxed out on the gain, mixed like all the instruments are crashing into one another, commanded by a singer whose throat sounds like a black hole for cigarette smoke (or maybe cigarette ash). Dissonant, distorted and demented shit-fi magic. Noise rock for a barfight of World War III proportions.

Wichita Lineman / Guinnevere
ALBUM | The Dick Slessig Combo

The Dick Slessig Combo (none of whom are named Dick Slessig, by the way) took the Glen Campbell classic and swapped the luscious orchestration for a sparser, quieter setup: a guitar, a drum kit, a Hammond organ, a Portasound keyboard and something called a “hi-lo” (my research skills fail me here). What was once a 3 minute track becomes 43 minutes of warm and winding jamming, soft and ultramellow. Something to watch the sunrise to as you cruise the loneliest open roads.

Although I never wanna play the name recognition game with recs, I know this personnel list will probably be of interest to some reading: Mark Lightcap from Acetone, The For Carnation’s Steve Goodfriend and a man named Carl Bronson (his only band it seems, the guy should’ve played in more). Cheese in the mousetrap for some of you out there. God knows I’m a mouse and I sure as hell did bite.
