INIGO'S PICKS
Bandwagonesque
ALBUM | Teenage Fanclub
Metal mfin Baby. I always thought Teenage Fanclub was one of those bands where it was just “historically important” to know about them; to only listen to them in the context of a lineage of bands. Liam Gallagher once infamously said that Teenage Fanclub was the second greatest band in the world (only second to Oasis). There’s so much game to be taught here… the economics of guitar hooks, the true value of fleeting lo-fi moments, HOW MUCH distortion could you have before it’s a different genre entirely? people tend to forget how hard it is to write catchy pop-rock. its an art AND a craft!
And the Wind (Live and Loose!)
SINGLE | MJ Lenderman
it’s all just Neil Young, really. mean that with love and adoration in my heart but the lineage is undeniable. not like he makes the same music but god damn if you hate country in this day and age youre just ignorant and shutting yourself off from amazing and some truly human songwriting. plus, mj lenderman is a Hiwatt DR103 Guy.
Heavy Weather
ALBUM | Weather Report
RIP Jaco Pastorius. i picked this because im actually selling my CD of this album and its in pretty good condition. only got it recently but i realized im not that much of a jazz fusion guy to warrant keeping it. still also hoping for a Steely Dan night at Mow’s and i think jude’s already on the idea. watch this space. anyways hmu. ill price the CD fairly for you if you read this.
Horse with No Name
SINGLE | America
its the year of the horse but youve heard this song for your entire life and it mightve just slipped through the cracks of your attention span. family dinners at restaurants with open mics. stray notes from distorted jeepney station radios. your favorite titos talking about the absurd price of gasoline in between song requests. it’s all Connected, really..
GABY'S PICKS
Lose Yourself to Dance (feat. Pharrell Williams)
SINGLE | Daft Punk
Okay, sue me. I only just now listened to Random Access Memories in full. Generational shit, as most have foretold - all loose and sweatsoaked. If there are any local DJs out there who'd use this track in one of their sets, please give me a call. I will be there.
Industry
ALBUM | Nick Micay
Gets me hopepilled, despite what the HBO show this OST is written for entails (go watch if you haven't!). The use of dialogue and tension between certain beats is always masterfully timed and playfully dynamic. You could run ten marathons to this.
AJ'S PICKS
On the Run
ALBUM | Oldstar
I’ve been deep in an alt-country and slowcore binge lately and I just so happened to stumble upon this album quite recently (one of the few times my algorithm worked to my favor). I'm absolutely taken by the hazy and pastoral atmosphere that the album settles into. It almost feels like you're biding your time in the blistering heat, reminiscing on old memories, and looking back on things long gone.
Before We Go Under
ALBUM | The Magick Heads
I’m still relatively new to New Zealand’s Dunedin Sound but this album felt like a perfect introduction. Its simplistic, homespun energy makes it feel like it's just existing in its own little world, detached from trends or outside noise, content to simply be. It's just so charming and endearing and has sort of reawakened the inner twee pop fan in me that has been laying dormant for a while.
